Job Title:        Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics

Position Summary:

The Plainedge Union Free School District is seeking an innovative, hardworking, collaborative educator to become our next Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics. The Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics is expected to develop, manage, and supervise the district’s physical education, health, and interscholastic sports/athletic programs. This position requires evening and weekend commitments.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, manage, and supervise developmentally appropriate health, physical education and interscholastic sports/athletic programs that align with the district’s overall educational mission and goals and are accessible to all students.
  • Work with the district leadership team to continue to innovate and develop a strategic vision for health, physical education and interscholastic sports/athletics.
  • Represent the Plainedge Union Free School District in all league and athletic associations and attend all meetings.
  • Schedule all middle school, junior varsity, and varsity contests for interscholastic teams.
  • Ensure that all coaching positions are filled with competent and properly trained coaches.
  • Supervise, develop, and evaluate all health teachers, physical education teachers and coaches.
  • Prepare and implement a fiscally sound annual budget.
  • Oversee the distribution, collection, storage, upkeep, and replacement of all school athletic uniforms and equipment.
  • Manage all Athletic Facilities districtwide and associated schedules.
  • Ensure that athletic fields and facilities are prepared for hosting athletic practices and contests.
  • Communicate with both students and parents regarding appropriate expectations for each level of competition.
  • Ensure that all athletic equipment, facilities, fields, teaching areas and courts are kept clean and safe for daily use
  • Report and post athletic achievements for both individuals and teams to the district leadership team and on our social media accounts.
  • Maintain accurate records of team and individual athletic statistics and accomplishments.
  • Track and report on team progress through analyzing past performances, recent successes, and areas for improvement.
  • Maintain an awareness of industry events and changes, such as regulation changes as well as NCAA guidelines.
  • Organize and implement award ceremonies for athletic teams and athletes with post-high school commitments.
  • Organize coaches’ meetings at the beginning of each season to review expectations, guidelines, and rules of play.
  • Distribute weekly facility schedule so coaches can plan practices accordingly.
  • Schedule transportation for all away athletic contests.
  • Secure the necessary number of qualified officials, chaperones and scorekeepers necessary for each home contest.
  • Review and revise the department handbooks annually.
  • Distribute Parent-Student Handbook to team parents each season.
  • Maintain and update athletic website pages with schedules, locations, and results of all interscholastic games.
  • Manage the High School Athletic and Fitness Center for students, athletic teams, and the community.
  • Coordinate with the school health office and the athletic trainers to ensure that all student- athletes have turned in required forms/paperwork and adhere to all concussion protocols.
  • Perform other duties as determined by the Superintendent of Schools and/or his/her designee.
Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of relevant experience in teaching health and/or physical education.
  • Preferred experience in coaching varied sports and levels (middle school, junior varsity, varsity).
  • Successful background working with student athletes and coaches.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with a professional and empathetic approach.
  • Willingness to be part of a collaborative environment and work closely with colleagues and parents.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Capacity to meet the physical demands of the role.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Positive attitude, flexible approach, and a sense of humor.

 

Requisite Certifications: SDA or SDL in addition to Physical Education
